Seventh Post: <|=+ Talking Points +=|> Rodriguez - “Aria” & Collier - “Teaching Multilingual Children”
Rodriguez - “Aria”
Rodriguez's aptly titled selection, "Aria," doesn't so much argue as explain his family's motivation for, and the conflicting impact of, abandoning their home language (Spanish) in favor of that of the dominant power (English).
1. Is it possible that the language scenario exacerbates (or provides a vehicle for) what is an otherwise natural process among children and families? (ie, children gaining an identity independent of, and often also a rejection of, that home self?)
2. In what ways might translanguaging have altered Rodriguez's experience?
3. Do you think the text was written in Spanish, English, or a combination of the two?
Collier - “Teaching Multilingual Children”
Virginia Collier argues that for ELL students to grow proficient in discursive English, embracing translanguaging proves the most effective approach.
1. While she states explicitly that "Second-language or foreign-language methods are inappropriate for native speakers," but - from what I could tell - does not explain with equal explicitness why not. Or did I miss something?
2. Is there an ideal and isolated balance between "instrumental (practical use) or integrative (identity with another group)" (page 225) for most accelerated L2 proficiency regardless of individual variable factors? And does translanguaging potentially strike exactly that balance?
3. How has reading both Collier and Rodriguez impacted the teachers in this class?
